upstart crow collective was co-founded by Betsy Schwartz, Kate Wisniewski and Rosa Joshi in 2006. Our mission is to produce classical plays with diverse female and non-binary casts, re-imagining these works for a contemporary audience. Our work is text centered, highly physical, and visually imaginative. We include cis gendered women, trans women and non-binary people in our commitment to creating opportunities for those who have been traditionally marginalized by the very male dominated Shakespearean canon. Our goal is to connect with modern audience by viewing these works through a new lens.
We've presented three critically acclaimed productions of Shakespeare plays: Bring Down the House (an adaptation of the Henry VI plays, produced with Seattle Shakespeare Company) in 2017, Titus Andronicus in 2012 and King John in 2006. Or most recent production RICHARD III was co produced with Seattle Shakespeare Company and ran September 12th - October 7th in Seattle Rep's Leo K. Theater featuring Sarah Harlett as the title role.
